Did you receive two ballots?
IF YOU LIVE IN DEHESA, HARBISON CANYON OR GRANITE HILLS, YOU RECEIVED TWO BALLOTS. HERE'S WHY. There is an election for two Crest seats on the Crest/Dehesa/Harbison Canyon/Granite Hills Community Planning Group.
Residents of Dehesa, Harbison Canyon and Granite Hills received two ballots because the Planning Group election was erroneously left off the ballot by the Registrar of Voters. The error is the result of the County of San Diego initially misinforming the Registrar of Voters about which areas are included in the election. By the time the error was discovered, the main general election ballot was already on its way out. To resolve the problem, voters in Dehesa, Granite Hills and Harbison Canyon were sent a second ballot with only the Planning Group election. Voters in Crest had the Planning Group election included in their main general election ballot because when the Registrar of Voters was first informed by the County of the election jurisdiction, the County had indicated the Crest seats would only be voted on by the voters in Crest. Voters should return both ballots using the separate envelopes.
WHY IS THERE ONLY AN ELECTION FOR THE CREST SEATS ON THE PLANNING GROUP AND NOT THE OTHER THREE REGIONS? There is no election for the Dehesa, Granite Hills or Harbison Canyon seats on the Planning Group because not enough candidates filed to trigger an election. When an office comes up and the number of candidates who file is equal to or less than the number of seats up at that time, there is no election.
For the two Crest seats up for election, there are three candidates.
WHAT DOES THE CREST/DEHESA/HARBISON CANYON/GRANITE HILLS PLANNING GROUP DO? Planning Groups are advisory panels created by the County of San Diego in unincorporated areas of the county to provide input on planning and land use. San Diego County's I-1 policy creates a process for Planning Groups to advise the county on updates and implementation of the region's community plan. Topics in our current community plan include local roads, fire access/egress routes, conservation and open space, among others. Planning Group members are elected, except when no election is triggered, and in that case the members are appointed.
WHO ARE YOU AND WHY ARE YOU RUNNING? I'm glad you asked! I'm Ron Nehring -- a resident of Crest for more than 20 years and a former appointee of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection. My priorities are straightforward: (1) Improve Wildfire safety, (2) Stand up against taxes, fees and tolls; and (3) Preserve the distinctive character of our communities. And: I want our roads to be in good condition and safe! More information
